Adverum Biotechnologies, Inc. is a mission-driven clinical-stage company that aims to establish gene therapy as a new standard of care for highly prevalent ocular diseases with the aspiration of developing functional cures to restore vision and prevent blindness. Adverum is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Intellectual Property (IP) Attorney or Agent with a strong background in biotechnology. This successful candidate will work closely with the Vice President, IP in building, managing, defending and enforcing the company’s intellectual property portfolio. The Attorney/Agent will support our internal scientific colleagues as well as senior leadership in the capturing of innovation and development of the IP portfolio. This position will work closely with internal scientific staff capturing innovation, and perform due diligence, patentability, freedom to operate searches, and other intellectual property related matters.
What you’ll do:
- Drive patent preparation and prosecution work internally and with outside counsel.
- Interact with internal scientists to capture innovation.
- Conduct patentability and freedom to operate searches.
- Conduct due diligence on potential research collaborators, partners and competitors
- Support corporate strategic IP initiatives.
- Oversee the management and maintenance of a portion of the company's IP portfolio, including patents, trademarks, and trade secrets.
- Assist with and/or conduct thorough IP due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and licensing deals, evaluating the IP assets and risks associated with potential transactions.
- Assist in managing and coordinating IP litigation efforts, including preparing for trial, conducting legal research, and collaborating with external counsel.
About you:
- Juris Doctorate (JD) and Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline, preferably biotechnology, molecular biology, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Registered to practice before the USPTO.
- At least 8+ years of overall professional experience, including at least four years of progressively responsible in-house corporate IP experience and significant transactional experience. At least some substantive litigation experience preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of patent prosecution procedure, including international and foreign patent prosecution procedure, statutes and treaties.
- Prior track record of establishing professional dependability with executive management by conveying clear, succinct and correct advice, including straightforward guidance as to risks and benefits of IP-related activities.
- Ability to independently handle IP and transactional legal matters, assist and guide outside counsel and work collaboratively with both scientific and corporate colleagues.
- Ability to set and meet ambitious deadlines, handle numerous multifaceted legal issues and see projects through to conclusion.
This is a contract position with an hourly rate range of $80/hr-$105/hr.
